Map 2 below gives a sense of the scale as one goes north into Alaska, away from the port cities that the cruise lines focus on into more of a wilderness experience.

 

One gets to Denali from Anchorage by a wonderful train that takes a few hours and then the National Park opens up to share sightseeing, land, and water experiences that are unrivaled for their beauty and fun.

 

Fairbanks, 122 miles north of Denali, is mostly visited because it is north enough to be the best place to see the Northern Lights. The best time to see the Northern Lights is from  August to April- which essentially means August to October and then late March-April.
