Chapter 1

For several years I was fortunate to travel internationally in my role as President for two global education companies. Although I had been traveling internationally to Europe and Australia on business since my days with Weight Watchers - and Jacqui and I have been traveling since forever- during this period I documented my thoughts and feelings by creating a journal format.

I shared the journals during and/or after each trip with a select group of friends and family. They liked them. They encouraged me to keep writing. I did.

On a recent flight I was cleaning up files on my hard drive when I came across the journals and re-read them. I was taken back in time to re-live my experiences. They are a much better memento for me than a t-shirt or a mug!

Now I wish I had written more. I didn’t write enough about all the trips with Jacqui…….Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, UK, Ireland, etc. And there were many other personal and business trips and experiences where I didn’t write and wish now that I had. Like the incredible journey up the coast in Portugal that included a seafood extravaganza; an evening of Tango in Buenos Aires; sushi in Tokyo; a return trip to Frankfurt 24 hours after just returning to LA from Frankfurt, a trip to Bologna Italy via Paris where I took two Ambien and have no recollection of making the plane change, a Mediterranean cruise with the kids, a hotel stay in Monterrey Mexico where tourists were being snatched from their room and held for ransom, a cruise to Alaska, etc.

My favorite journal entry? The trip to the Buchenwald concentration camp (see, "Journey to the Real Heart of Darkness") which I forced myself to write that day so my kids and grandkids would know of these events through my tears and quivering hands on the keyboard.

If you would like a copy of the journals please let me know at larry.appell@cruiseplanners.com and I’ll be happy to send you a copy. And if you read any of them and feel as transported as I did, then that would be great and make me pleased about sharing them.
