Larry’s Best Things To Do or See in Italy
Everyone has a top 10 list of things to do or places to see in Italy. Here is my contribution.
The Colosseum and the Forum
If you go to New York, you go to the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. When in Rome…….
Have a drink at Harry’s Bar in Venice
Once again, if you want to be in the same space as the great writers of the 20th century you can go to the Algonquin Hotel in New York, or Harry’s Bar if you are fortunate enough to be in Venice.
Visit the Jewish Ghetto in Venice
One goes to Italy for many reasons, food, wine, culture, history, etc. It doesn’t whether you are Jewish or not, the ghetto is a history lesson and a first-hand opportunity to experience how the 20th century became the 20th century.
Catch the Sunset at the Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence
Walk, grab a cab, or rent a car. Just go to the top of the park to marvel at the majesty of Florence below you. Watching the sun disappear at the end of another glorious Florentine day is worth the trip to Italy in the first place.
Get up early and have a coffee and some cheese, and maybe some pastries, at the stalls and shops in the Campo De’ Fiore in Rome
Plan on a long visit to the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence
There are no Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museums in Florence so the closest you can come to “seeing” the greats of Italy is to visit Santa Croce. The burial crypts of Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Galilei, Marconi, etc, etc. are here. Plus great art. And, most of your friends who have been to Italy very likely missed it when they were in Florence.
Explore Matera
This is on my list but we have not yet been there. (Everyone has a bucket list)
Have tea or lunch at the Villa D’Este on Lake Como
The last time we were there we had dinner at a table next to Don Rickles and Bob Newhart and their wives. Celebrity star gazing aside, this is our favorite hotel experience.
Dinner in Bologna
The cars built there are beautiful, the balsamic vinegar is sublime and dinner in Bologna is as good as you’ve heard.
Shop at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan
It’s only the oldest active shopping gallery in Italy and the stained glass ceiling is spectacular.
