Italian Bathrooms

We can make this brief. When you are out on the road taking in all the sights and enjoying everything Italian, don't expect a rest stop like you are used to in the states. Not by a long shot.
Your best bet for finding a restroom when you’re out and about are restaurants (yes, you’ll need to order something) and maybe large hotels where they might assume you’re a guest. We've made random stops for an espresso just to take advantage of a cafe’s facilities.
When you do find a restroom, you can expect it to be down a narrow set of stairs to some damp cellar area. And don’t expect a seat on the toilet or toilet paper (always travel with your own!).
That's it. Italian bathrooms on the road are not going to win any awards from Conde Nast. Plan accordingly.
