The Right Way to Pack for Travel

Sure, every magazine in the world has published at least one article on "How to Pack" so we figured we would find some of the good ones and save you the time to do a search.

This one is from the NYT from 2017 and covers most of the main points. In our experience, since this is an art form and not a science, continuous experimentation is best until you find your "Eureka" moment and then replicate it to eliminate one element of your travel planning process.

Personally, my favorite bit of advice from the article is, "Fully get rid of the ‘just in case I need it category,” the couple added in an email sent from the airport. “If and when you need it, you can buy it”.

We tell this story often, but we violated every rule in the book when, back in the day, we packed many more suitcases for a multi-country trip that included business and pleasure only to find ourselves heaving, literally throwing, suitcases up the steps of the train in Milan and then finding the strength to lift them atop the seats for the trip. So yes, the article is offering sage guidance when it says, "The bigger your suitcase, the more you will put into it. The simplest way to limit your pack-rat habit is to buy a hard-sided suitcase no taller than 22 inches, with a structured shell, so you can’t squeeze in any extras."

We hope this helps!

Cheers!
