GETTING A PASSPORT IN A PINCH
Published Saturday, June 4th 2022GETTING A PASSPORT IN A PINCH
It happens. Although travel advisors go to great lengths to make sure that their clients have a valid passport when they make their reservations…….and that the passport will be valid six months after the scheduled return to the states, it happens.
Perhaps you plan to travel in the next few weeks and just realized that your passport has expired, or perhaps you just found a great travel deal and don't yet even have a passport. Regardless, don't stress. Here is how to go about getting a passport right away
On their website, (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/get-fast.html), the U.S. Department of State identifies four types of passport processing and how long the process takes to complete and get you a passport using their services:
Routine (8-11 weeks)
Expedited (5-7 weeks)
Urgent (14 days)
Emergency (3 business days)
Private passport processing services can be found on the internet with varying fees and process steps; all will require fees.
FedEx offices, in partnership with RushMyPassport, can even get you a passport in 24 hours (https://www.cntraveler.com/story/how-to-get-a-passport-in-24-hours)
The best advice we can offer is to monitor the expiration date of your passport and even if you are not planning new travel in the near term future, renew your passport when you are 12-15 months out from expiration. And, if you have a newborn in your family and if she is going to travel with you as an infant, order a passport for her as well (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/need-passport/under-16.html.)
